My Insulin Strategies

This blog is my personal record of attempting to lose weight and get in shape with Type 1 Diabetes.  I have no medical expertise; the strategies I use here I have developed through trial and error while living with my diabetes.  Everyone is different; you and your health care team will have to find strategies that work for you.

This page was created for my own personal use, as a quick way to find the strategies that have been working for me.  For me, I need to do heavier activities after eating a meal. Also, note to self: don't forget to bring a Gatorade or equivalent to add carbs without having to eat!!!

  • Skiing: 25-30% basal, 30% bolus at lunch/dinner time.  Have a carb heavy meal (don't have salad).
  • Snowshoeing: On
    • Flat Land: 70% basal, 65% bolus at meal (both carb and correction). Plus drink some regular Gatorade as you start snowshoeing.
    • Hilly Land: (work in progress) try a 55% or 60% basal (65% wasn't good enough when going up big hills). Unsure of meal bolus used.
  • Swimming: (work in progress) 45% basal, 45% bolus at lunch/dinner time.
    • Possibility: 50% basal an hour an a half prior, regular bolus at lunch/dinner time, no correction.
